It was built in 1625 for the emperors Nurhachi (1559-1626) and Hungtaiji (1592-1643), who helped in the founding of the Qing Dynasty. Its architectural style comprises the Han, the Mongol and the Manchu ones. It is one of the best preserved in the whole China, after the Forbidden City in Beijing.

It is the burial place of the Emperor Huangtaiji, who founded the Qing Dynasty, as well as his wife and many concubines.
