Tibet Autonomous Region Brief Introduction
Tibet is one of the autonomous regions of the Poeple's Republic of China. It is located in the south west of China in the so-called Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Tibet covers an area of 1,2 million square km and has a population of 2,3 million people. Tibet is also known as "The roof of the world" because it lies at 4000 meters above sea level. It is also famous for having more than 50 peaks higher than 7,000 meters. The most famous is the world highest mountain Qomolanma (better known as Mount Everest). Tibet is appealing especially for its wonderful landscapes and its long traditional culture.

| Lhasa
In Tibetan language, its name means "sacred place of Buddhas" and it is the capital of the Tibetan Autonomous Region. It is a city with a story of more than 1,300 years. | The Potala Palace
Situated in the centre of Lhasa, it towers the city from its high position. It was built in the 17th century, under the reign of Songtsen Gampo and covers an area of about 41 hectares. It was the former winter residence of the Dalai Lamas and now it is a visitable museum, where Tibetans go also for pilgrimages. The 13-stories main building is 115,703 meters high and consist of the White and Red Palaces with more than 1,000 rooms (scripture rooms, reading rooms, stupas' rooms , bedrooms, monks' rooms, and so on).

| Jokhang Monastery

| The Sera Monastery
This huge monastery compound lies on the foot of a mountain a few kilometers out of the centre of the city of Lhasa. It was build in 1419 by one of the eight disciples of Tsongkhapa, founder of the Ge lug pa School of Tibetan Buddhism (known as "the yellow hats school").

| Norpulingkha
The Norpulingha, or Treasure Garden, is located in the western suburb of Lhasa and it was firstly built in 1740 but later it has been restored and enlarged becoming the Dalai Lamas' Summer Palace.

| Barkhor Street
It is an open-air market street surrounding the Jokhang Monastery. Here you can find many traditional handicrafts and products shops and also see pilgrims walking around the Monastery with praying wheels in their hands chanting sutras (Buddhist scriptures). In this place you can feel and see the true traditional features and lifestyle of Tibetan people.
