Hutong Tour
"Hutong" are those narrow alleys or lane typical of Beijing. They can be found especially in the area that surrounds The Forbidden Palace and were built during the Yuan (1206-1341), Ming (1368-1628) and the Qing (1644-1908) Dynasties. Most of them consist of a building complex formed by four houses around a square courtyard that varies in size depending on the social status of the people who lived in it. A peculiarity of the older hutong is that they all face south for better lighting, so at the beginning hutong all run east to west. Later other hutong were built lining south-north to have better passageways.
