ICEC (International Culture Exchange Center) Introduction
Chinese Language Program in Beijing University of Post and Telecommunications.
Established in 1955, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) is one of the first 61 universities which are being built preferentially in the National Project "211". It is the most vital research and development center in the field of information and telecommunications in China and has acquired a world-wide reputation in the fields of information processing, network management, information security, wireless communication, and artificial intelligence. BUPT boasts a strong teaching and research faculty, with 800 full-time lecturers, professors, and associate professors. The student enrolment of 13 departments at BUPT, at present, is 13,726, including doctoral students, postgraduates and undergraduates. BUPT has extensive academic exchanges with foreign countries and routinely hosts large-scale international academic conferences, and developed almost 8000 foreign students in the past decades. BUPT is very near downtown and is near the city' s most important sites by public transportation.
The International Cultural Exchange Center (ICEC) located at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications is proud to announce its unique program in effective teaching of Chinese. ICEC covers over seven different Chinese language levels and provides many other elective courses that benefit the specific needs of each student wishing to improve Chinese language skills.
Intensive courses combined and the inclusion individual language tutorials, diversified field trips, modern housing facilities, with the inclusion of experienced on-site staff, make ICEC an incredible place to study and learn cross-cultural skills, especially under the auspices of one of the most prestigious universities in China. You can choose from our year-long, semester, summer and one-month options.

Textbook: "A new Chinese Course Book I", Beijing Language and Culture University Press
Description: For students with no prior knowledge of Chinese. The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to modern standard Chinese through the four basic skills: oral comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. The course will concentrate on correcting pronunciation and the four tones as well as the basic grammatical patterns. Students completing the first-year of Chinese language study with ICEC Beijing will learn approximately 500 characters and 900 words; they will be able to engage in simple one-to-one conversation, with simple words, understand easy general texts on familiar topics, and understand uncomplicated general language if pronounced clearly. The students will have acquired language skills beyond a survival level.

-Intermediate
Textbook: "A New China", Princeton University Press
Description: The students with one year of college-level Chinese language study or the equivalent or three semesters for intermediate level. By the end of this level of study, the students will have mastered approximately 1,200 characters and 2,500 words. They will be able carry on an ordinary conversation and express their own views on familiar subjects quite fluently. Similarly, students will be able to read material on familiar subjects with ease. Students will be able to basically understand a native speaker using commonly used vocabulary. The course provides students with the opportunity to master their reading and writing skills through written assignments on contemporary Chinese topics as well as practical everyday issues that a student might face.
Hours: 60hrs/summer(8weeks) or 112.5hrs/spring/fall semester(15weeks).
-Upper Intermediate
Textbook: "All things considered", Princeton University Press
Description. For students with two years of college-level Chinese language study or the equivalent; five semesters for intermediate high. By the end of the third-year level, students will have a cumulative knowledge of more than 2,000 characters and 5,000 word compounds. They will read and analyse original materials written in a variety of styles and learn to distinguish these styles and understand the content in cultural context. Students will read at a level that enables them to deal with a fairly broad range of topics beyond the text materials. Orally, they will be able to express their own thoughts and appoints of view and discuss fairly complicated issues. Students are expected to complete daily writing assignments.

Advanced I and II
Textbook: "Spotlight on China, Book ", Beijing Language and Culture University Press.

Description: For students with three years of college-level Chinese language study or the equivalent of seven semesters. At the fourth-year level, students will learn approximately 3,000 more new words. Students will be able to read, write, and use with complete accuracy the 1,500 most commonly used words, comprehend the Chinese of a native speaker (spoken at a rate of 130-150 characters per minute), as well as use Chinese to engage in a normal, fluent conversation without hesitation. They will be capable of writing critical essays of 500 words or more, expressing what they have seen or heard, as well as their own thoughts.

Description: The spoken classes emphasize the importance of oral skills. Practical vocabulary which presented in students' other classes is reinforced through dialogues and pattern drills. Interactive classroom activities such as debates and role-playing are used. Also, the students are given exercises and activities designed to help tem summarize, explain, evaluate and discuss the weekly topic. Video and audiotapes containing dialogues and excerpts from news broadcasts, films and television programs related to the weekly topic are presented along with exercises and activities to test and develop the students' comprehension. Students will learn to present short speeches, participate in structured debates and engage in free conversation about issues in contemporary Chinese society and culture. Description: Business Chinese provides students with an opportunity to become familiar with modern business-related materials written in Chinese. This course is designed to expose foreign students with up-to-date information on doing business in China. Particular emphasis has been placed on the authenticity in describing current Chinese business practices and trends. Students can therefore gain a better understanding of today' s business environment in Chins while also enhancing their knowledge of Chinese used in everyday business transactions.

| Accomodation
Accommodations are located in a modern air-conditioned apartment near the campus, with two participants sharing one room. You will have access to a computer lab, lounge, independent bathroom, and convenient laundry room to wash your clothes. For wideband internet connections, you may want to bring along your own laptop, provided it is insured. Every apartment has an internet connection.
Meals are not included in the ICEC program fee, but you may take meals at the many canteens on the campus or at restaurants off campus. ICEC, however, will provide you with meals while on field trips.
